Here are the big ideas in what we've been learning:
Right now, we've learned every consonant letter and the sound that it makes. We've learned short vowels and their sounds too (students should know what the vowels are). We're working on sound spellings right now. Today, we worked on the /k/sound and the spellings that make that sound. Students are accessing the sound-spelling cards on the wall to assist them in making the correct spelling choice. On the c and k card, it lists c, k, and ck_. We learned that when using the ck_ spelling, it can only come with a letter after it and cannot come at the beginning of a word. So much fun!
Because we've learned all of these sounds, students should be able to sound out words as a strategy to decode. When there are tricky spellings, help them out and then have them repeat the word or sound. If your student is reading fluently already, great! These sound spellings will help them in writing tricky words too!
